Who invented gummy bears?
If you’re reading this right now, there’s no doubt that you’re a huge fan of gummy bears, and who can blame you? The colourful, delicious, sweet, and fruity flavours is what makes them so appealing to everyone. They are essential to every child’s (and adult’s) sweet tooth!
Gummy bears are the perfect chewy treat to snack on when you’re feeling a bit hungry. The good news is that they can be found at almost every store you shop at! But you might be wondering… where did these gummy bears originate from in the first place?
Gummy bears were first created by Hans Riegal, a German man, in 1920. After quitting his job as a confectionary worker and creating his own sweets business, Hans began by making hard candies using just a kettle, marble slab, and bags of sugar. At the time, his only employee was his wife who delivered his products by bicycle.
Hans wanted to expand his company so he came up with the idea to create chewy candies in the shape of dancing bears (Tanzbären). Children were overjoyed when seeing them at festivals - I mean who wouldn’t be? At the time, these bears were made from gelatin and only came in the colour gold. They were also much taller and slimmer than the gummy bears that we see today.
Eventually, his company changed the shape of the bears to become shorter and wider, hoping to appear more appealing to children. Gummy bears were then introduced to America, and now there are companies all over the world with their own take on these delicious sweets!
Brands, such as Pink Panda, have taken influence from Hans. Although we don’t stop at sweet gummy bears, we make guilt-free indulgence in the shape of dinosaurs and jujubes as well! As a matter of fact, we have made a commitment to improve the gummies that are known and loved and have made them much healthier!
